Why your birth city matters
Most Feng Shui tools ask for your birth year. That gives you a rough starting point. But the classical compass method goes further. It uses the exact latitude and longitude of the place you were born. This changes the calculation — and the result.
The compass is precise by nature
In classical Feng Shui, magnetic north is not the same as true north. The difference between the two is called magnetic declination. It changes depending on where in the world you are. A compass reading in London is not the same as a reading in Tokyo or São Paulo.
Your birth coordinates let Sanctuary apply the correct local magnetic correction. Without this, the directions assigned to you are approximate. With it, they are accurate.
What about the birth time zone?
When you enter your birth city, Sanctuary also knows which time zone applied on your date of birth. This matters because time zones have changed throughout history. Some countries moved their clocks by half an hour. Some changed zone entirely. What your birth certificate says and what the solar time actually was can be different.
Sanctuary handles this automatically. You just enter the city. The rest is calculated for you.
What if I was born in a small town?
Enter the nearest city or the town name. Sanctuary looks up the coordinates automatically. For most calculations, being accurate to within 50–100 kilometres is sufficient. If you were born on a border between two regions, the city-level accuracy is more than enough.
