What Is the Hour Pillar?
Your Bazi birth chart has four columns. Each one is called a Pillar. The Hour Pillar is the fourth. It is calculated from the exact time you were born. Without it, your chart is incomplete.
Why does the birth time matter?
In Bazi, time moves in blocks of two hours. Each block has its own energy — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The block you were born into becomes your Hour Pillar.
Your Hour Pillar tells Indre about the part of you that is more private. It is connected to your inner world, your late-life energy, and — if you have children — the relationship with them. It also reveals hidden strengths and tensions that do not show up in your Year, Month, or Day pillars.
Think of the four pillars like four lenses on the same person. The Year Pillar is how the world first sees you. The Month Pillar is your work and ambition. The Day Pillar is your core self. The Hour Pillar is what lies beneath.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
An approximate time — even just morning, afternoon, or evening — is better than nothing. Indre can work with a range. If you have no information at all, the chart will be read from three pillars. It is still useful. But the Hour Pillar adds depth that cannot come from any other source.
How precise does the time need to be?
The two-hour blocks in the Bazi system are called Earthly Branches. They run from midnight to midnight in pairs: Rat (11pm–1am), Ox (1am–3am), Tiger (3am–5am), and so on through all twelve signs.
If you were born at 7:45am, your Hour Pillar falls in the Dragon hour (7am–9am). If you were born at 8:55am, it is still Dragon. So a rough time — accurate to the nearest hour — is usually enough to place you correctly.
Hospital records, birth certificates, and family diaries are the best sources. Some people find their time in family Bibles or baby books. It is worth looking.

When you enter your birth time in Sanctuary, Indre calculates all four pillars and reads them as a whole. The Hour Pillar is one piece. Together, the four pillars show you a map of who you are and where your energy is going.
